What happens if you leave conditioner in too long?

Most conditioner bottles say to leave the conditioner in for 1 or 2 minutes and then rinse it out, whereas some say to rinse immediately.

What would happen if someone left conditioner in for longer than that time…say 10 minutes? What would happen? If it is a bad thing to do, what would happen?

  1. Your hair would become extra soft. Unfortunately, touching it could irritate the rash that could develop on your scalp.

  2. The longer the better! 1 or 2 is just a reccomendation because most people shower and are in a hurry. 5-10 is great, but sometimes i leave mine in for 30 to an hour if I have time. (wash, get out of the shower, condition, then rinse later) It’s great to leave it in, you hair gets the most out of it! Ends up softer, shiney, and more healthy.

  3. I really don’t think it would do much… because I leave it in longer than it says, and my hair is just soft. Just don’t put the conditioner on your roots, bc they’ll look oily. I put the conditioner on starting at the very ends and work it up about halfway. I wouldn’t leave it in longer all the time though, bc the build-up will make your hair look dirty faster.

  4. most of these people are STUPID!
    i dohair for a living.
i took many classes over this stuff.

1st.You can OVer condition your hair.
theres a PH formula thats in almost all
conditioners. [[check your shampoo label for ingerdints]]
2nd. If you do have that than try not leaving it on your hair any longer than 2 or 3 mins.
[[the PH formula is pretty much dipping your hair in acid]]

    it’s bad

    Solution:
    try getting leave in conditonar
insted on the regular if u need it!

Hot oil also makes your hair VERy nice.

    try buying stuff from salons.
there a whole better than wal-mart
    stuff.

    no cheap shampoo.

    =]] hope i helped

  5. Depends what type of conditioner those cheap may result in hair loss if the conditioner gets to your scalp.

  6. after a while, if you don’t even rinse it off, the hair gets sticky, but at least leave it on for 1 minute.

  7. Well , It wouldn’t hurt your hair that bad but you probally don’t want to do that because if your hair dries then it will be really greasy and gross . But ten minutes won’t hurt that bad it might make your head scratch for a while.

  8. Your hair would most likely get really greasy. Like when you don’t wash your hair for a few days. Conditioner is made to give your hair moisture.

  9. I usually leave it in about 10 minutes, while I shave my legs and its pretty much the same as if I left it in for 2 minutes. Although I don’t apply it near my scalp

  10. I leave mine on sometimes as leave in cond..and it works wonders…just dont over do it….no one can really tell you whats gonna work you need to try because all hair is different…

  11. my hair begins falling off and too much conditioner does too… nothing dramaticly bad should happen, but your hair might get dull, fall offf or get irritations to your skin.

  12. Ohmahgosh! I can’t believe the differing points of view on something as simple as this. It may depend on the conditioner your using. If it’s thick, like a cholestrol treatment, it may make your hair a bit oily or seem weighed down.

However, my hair is color treated and I often leave conditioner on my hair for 15-30 minutes once every week or two to deep treat it. In the summer I often layout with conditioner on my hair for up to an hour or more. When it seems really dry, I’ve even left it in my hair overnight.

My hair never fell out and I certainly never developed a rash or anything like that. It may depend on some peoples skin, for instance maybe they have more sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin you might want to avoid doing it.

When my hair is really, really extra dry…I actually rub some olive oil, or coconut oil onto it when I shower. Not too much, just enough to cover the ends that seem to get extra dry.

If you have naturally oily hair I wouldn’t recommend leaving conditioner in your hair much longer than recommended on the bottle.

  13. you should leave it in only a maximum of 3 minutes if it says 1-2, it could be bad for your hair. I always put it in, leave it in while i wash my body, and then its been another minute so i can wash my hair and body at the same time then

  14. nothing really, except…..except you’ll have MORE CONDITIONED HAIR THAN THE NEXT PERSON…..and now THAT is CLASS, HONEY

  15. Your hair would turn purple and eventually fall out. It happened to my grandma when she forgot to rinse it out.

  16. Your hair will go all frizzy and you dont wont that. It will also hurt your head the next time you use the shower.

  17. Conditioner is slightly acidic which flattens your hair cuticles (You’ve probably heard before that vinegar is a good conditioner) Normally leaving it in for a good while makes it softer. You’d probably have to leave the conditioner in for a long time before it does actual damage.

I really don’t mind who gets voted best answer but please don’t make it that person who “does [sic] hair for a living” who called the rest of the answerers stupid.

  18. OMG PPl r so stupid you cud leave it in overnight and it wouldn’t do nothing except make it silky and smooth

  19. well i leave conditioner in my hair all the time and it doesn’t really do anything … it might make your ends really frizzy but that all ..i leave it in and i use any type of conditioner …

  20. my hair is white bleach blonde and its dead, snapps off, brittel the lot.. and i leave conditioner in it for hours the longer the better my hairdresser told me to do it after she bleached my hair. x

  21. lmfao wow , these comments are too funny. u people get hyped on msg boards over conditonar lmfao wow , you guys all have no lives

  22. Ok .. I’m a hair dresser and you can leave conditioner in overnight with a cap to keep the moisture in . But you don’t want to use cheap conditioner cuz them alone are bad for your hair nd to much build up. You want salon conditioners ! It will not ruin ur hair if merging it is going to put moisture back into your hair and you can do this every night if you wanted .. Also if you have a very dry scalp you would do this also to help the dryness of the scalp. Hope this helped!

@email dennisperez her hair probably turned purple because she was using a purple based product which the conditioner had to be purple. If you use to much of a purple product especially blondes you will end up having purple hair . You wanna use it once every other week . You don’t want to leave it in overnight cuz your hair sucks in all that moisture and will have a tint of purple

  23. Makes ur split ends go away and makes ur hair super light soft and bouncy.

But it’s a chemical so just leave it in for 1-2 hours and ur hair will b gorEOUS!!!

  24. Well, I’m black and I use conditioner and lotion to slick my hair back in a pony tail after I wash it. Nothing bad has happened in all these years. My hair grows long and it smells good all the time. I trim my hair every 2 months and its healthy, thick, long, and bouncy. I don’t know what happens to white people hair.

  38. Dry Mouth syndrome is becoming an increasingly bigger issue as many illnesses are treated with multiple medications which cause dryness of the mouth. What has alarmed me is that many of my patients tell me that they were instructed by the medical community to suck on hard candy to increase the flow of saliva. Now it’s not just about educating the general public but also the medical community of the devastating effects of bathing our teeth in sugar over long periods time.

  39. Oh, and by the way, I am an atheist, a progressive-liberal AND… shhh… A HOMOSEXUAL! I bet you’re not surprised there. So grateful to know I will simply cease to exist when I die. Quite comforting, really. I did not exist before I was conceived and I will return to that state after I take my last breath. I wouldn’t want to live “forever” anyway. I mean, what if I got bored of tending sheep after several billion years?

  45. I purchased this tote to replace my current work handbag and I am very pleased to say that the specifications are perfect for my needs. It’s a spacious soft leather tote with an exterior pocket for small items like keys or even a card holder. The interior is roomie, split right and left section with a middle zipper section.

  48. I’m a professional hair dresser, and I leave conditioner in my hair all the time. The only thing it does is makes your hair more moisturized which makes it look shiner and feel softer. The only thing to remember is to not over do it. I leave conditioner in my hair two times a week ONLY! If you do it everyday your hair might start breaking as the scalp can only take so much moisture before it starts appearing and feeling greasy. This trick is lovely to use before a party or event.
REMEMBER: Be sure to use salon conditioner and NOT drugstore ones.
CAUTION: DO NOT use this trick if you already have greasy or oily hair as it might break and fall out!
