It depends on how you care for it. Go to a reputable piercing shop and clean. Buy your first ring or bar there, and verify with the store that it is sterile. They will give you instructions on how to keep it clean and what are the signs of infection. Follow their instructions closely and regularly throughout the healing process and you minimize the chance of an infection. You will not likely get if you catch necrosis of infection before it gets too bad. Lots of water is a good idea while you are healing. So, consider getting a nickel-free bar or ring in case you are sensitive to it, just one less factor to complicate the healing process.
