What should i do if my tattoo is flaking and looks like its fading?
I got my tattoo 9 days ago with my friends and my tattoo artist told me to put A & D ointment on it for 2 weeks. My tattoo is flaking off the ink and looks like its fading. The tattoo is all black and looks faded in the spots where it was flaking off. This is my first tattoo and i hate for it to be ruined. What should I do?

My two week old tattoo does exactly the same thing. It’s been flaking two times now. The first time after a week, and there’s still flakes on it. I don’t make a big deal out of it. Colors won’t be the same once you heal up, I guess.

go to your artist and ask for a Touch up.

I have 3 tattoos and all of mine did that when they were healing, I would give it another couple of weeks, wait until the flaking is gone and its totally smooth and then if the color looks bad, you can go back and get them to retouch it..Good luck..:o)

That is prefectly normal i have 2 tats and both did that when healing!! If your that worried i would go to the place you got it and ask them but i’m sure they will say the same thing :)

It’s supposed to do that. A tattoo is like having a cut. its basically a scab and normally scabs go away or scratches off. tattoos are always dark when you get it until the top layer comes off no need for a touch up until it really fades. I have 9 tattoos so trust me

Most tattoos need a touch up after a while. Wait until it fully heals for that though. Most shops will touch up for free within the first year.
For now, follow the artists instructions. Be sure to moisturize, and always cover up or wear sunscreen!

It’s perfectly normal during the healing process. I have 2 and they both went through the same thing. But I would suggest you stop using the A&D ointment. I heard that makes your tattoo fade more. Switch to a non scented, colorless lotion. I recommend Lubriderm or Aveeno.

I just got a tattoo a week ago and it is currently flaking, it almost looks like its falling off. My artist said to try and keep it dry and only to use moisturizer if it’s painful. Otherwise just let it flake, don’t scratch them off and once its done peeling it should look normal.

I have 12 tats. One took six 2hr sessions to finish my back. My left arm is sleeved w thick black tribal from my chest to the top of my hand. The rest are small, in comparison, but I do know how different tats react differently for several reasons. You skin type, location, ink used, artists style or method of inking, etc.
The hand for instance, will heal differently than a tat on your upper arm, or back.
Plastic wrap!?! No way! I’m an EMT and common sense dictates that a wound needs to dry in order to heal. Thus, the advise of minimal lotions and taking bandage off a few hrs max, before taking off and washing gently w hypoallergenic soap. Your hand is best. No wash cloth or luffa! Bad. I personally do not like neosporin, vasoline, bacitracin, or any lotion not dermatologist approved. Tattoo goo and Aquaphor in a pinch, but still draws out som color. Aquaphor has lanolin alcohol and glycerin. Not so good. Tattoo goo i have not had enough experience w to honestly give my opinion, however, I have heard and seen fine results.
If you had road rash, would you keep it moist? Nor would you keep a fresh set of stitches moist. The healing process nearly doubles and allows for more ink seepage. When a wound is moist, the body will continue to produce more plasma to push the “contaminant” out of the body. In this case, your ink.
Keep it clean, wash gently with antibacterial soap 3-4 times a day, using your finger tips to gently rub in. Rinse w luke warm water until the tat is no longer “slimy” feeling.
Pat excess water beads off w clean paper towel. Gently. Don’t dry. Let it air dry for 10-15 min.
Apply THIN coating of tattoo goo or Aquaphor for 2-3 days.
Thereafter, use same procedure as above. Simply substitute Lubriderm after washing and drying. I’ve tried eucerin, Vasoline lotion, st.Ives, Curel
and non worked nearly as good as Lubriderm. Plain ol’ daily use. I also like Curel as my second choice. However, for areas such as the feet, hands the skin is very thin and heals differently. Often requires a re-shoot. Or two.
The grey/silver color under the black peeling scab is VERY normal and you should wait until it is completely healed before you think you need a touch up. 3-4 weeks, you’ll know if the artist skipped a spot here and there.
I’ve never met an artist that didn’t stand by his work 100%. If they say they don’t do touch ups for free, I wouldn’t use him or her.
If you do have to go back for a touchup, TIP HIM/HER! They still need to use new needles, ink, gloves, etc. So, throw a ten or twenty their way. Goes a long way if you decide to go back.
And no, I am not a tattoo artist. This is simply my opinion, based on experience and common sense.
Hope this helps in some way.
There is no sure fire way to ensure proper healing, however, you can limit certain common mistakes if you do your research.

Stop using a&d after 4or 5 days. Use lotion til healed. To stop itching run under cold water for a min or two if u can’t use an ice cube for a few seconds. Worked on me all 4 of them.
